Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter to express my disappointment in guest columnist Eric Sparling’s comments (May 2, The Banner), in particular his views on celebrity spokespeople Bono and Al Gore.
These individuals have brought passion, awareness and millions of dollars to their causes. Perhaps it took Bono to be extremely rich before he realized how unfair it was to be poor. Yes, Al Gore does jet set around the world but in doing so speaks to thousands of people and raises awareness about the environment and our impact upon it.
The important thing is that they are making a difference. These ambassadors generate attention for their causes — from the media and general public alike.
Who would make a bigger impact on poverty, Bono or some uneducated, unwashed street person? It’s really hard to get the word out about global warming when you commune on a farm with no electricity or contact with the mainstream world.
I’m sick of people criticizing the actions of others especially when they do very little themselves. The world needs more ambassadors like Bono and Gore and less of the pessimistic nay-sayers like Eric Sparling!
