One of the highlights of the year in Grand Valley is getting to attend the grade 8 graduation. The big event this year was held on June 24 when 45 students took the next step. The school gym was decorated by the grade 7s for the night. There was a red carpet down the middle where the students marched in to the strains of piano music performed by Rebecca Setterfield.
After the diplomas were presented to each student, those who did exceptionally well were introduced and presented with specific awards.
Katie Bridger received the Music and the Math/Science incentive awards. The Math and the Academic (for highest marks) went to Marco Zanette. Jordan Shaw won the Geography and Science awards. The History and General Proficiency awards went to Carlo Zanette.
The French award was received by Kailey Hunter. Carley Menzies got the Visual Arts award. The Athletes of the Year were Jennifer Van Dyk and Ryan Coote. The English award went to Cullen Lewington.
The Most Improved Students were Anna Stark and Holly deVries. Dakoda Bruce was given the Citizenship award. The Arts Incentive award went to Tryston Johnston. Nikki Taylor was given the Leadership award. The Safety Parol award went to Devin Sherman.
Matthew Pegnam won the Tech award. Sydney Beam was awarded the Scott Benham Heart award. The Student Success award went to Jillian Sguigna.
Kailey Hunter gave a very moving and interesting Valedictorian address. She talked about the highlights of the nine years most of the students had spent at Grand Valley and District public school.
She mentioned that the students would be going in different directions, but would always be together in their fine memories. Kailey was awarded the Valedictorian’s medal.
This was followed by a slide presentation showing some of the highlights of this past year.
One of the major achievements was the Dufferin County basketball championships won by both the girls and boys teams. The students were shown as they are now and as they were when they were very young.
The night was completed with a reception for the students, their families and friends in the school library. As always, it was an inspirational evening.
