The Town of Orangeville walk held on College Avenue last fall has been recognized as the largest walk in Ontario and the second largest in Canada with 1,750 participants.
The event was officially recognized by the Guiness Book of Records.
“On Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at precisely 12:30 p.m. EDT, 231,635 Canadians walked one kilometre at 1,011 different venues. Canada has smashed the existing record of 100,915 set in 2006 by Western Australia,” Guinness said in a statement.
Many area schools took part in the event including students, staff and parents from St. Andrew, St. Benedict, St. Peter , Credit Meadows elementary and Princess Elizabeth schools. The walk was led by Mayor Rob Adams and RBC Olympian Sami Jo Small from the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team.
“Each event had to submit a verification form with the number of walkers and a photo. Each walker was given a sticker so that’s how we counted how many people participated,” explained Sonya Pritchard, director of parks and recreation, in a telephone interview. A certificate marking this achievement will be plaqued and put up in the Alder Street recreation centre, Pritchard said.
