Councillor embarrassed by O Canada
The rendition of O Canada being played before the start of council is due for an upgrade. Council began playing an instrumental version of the national anthem in May on a portable tape recorder.
Coun. Drew Brown requested the playing of O Canada be improved if the practise is to continue.
“I’m embarrassed to stand in a silent room with a rinky-dink recording of O Canada playing,” said Coun. Brown. “If it’s going to be there (played at the start of meetings) it is my desire it is done properly and not in the manner it is done now.”
Coun. Doug Wilcox and Coun. Bob Mason agreed with Brown that an improved version was required.
“A recording with words and maybe a more refined version of it,” said Wilcox.
Brown said he understood they were in a temporary quarters and there was no money for a sound system, but felt something could be done.

Mono Woman chosen citizen of the year
Devon Raymond of Mono Township has been chosen as an Ontario Citizen of the Year.
A call from Premier William Davis’ office last week informed her that she would be among the 12 people honored on Canada Day, July 1, in Toronto by Leitenant Governor John Black Aird.
“I was so surprised,” Devon says, “I couldn’t believe it when they called. All I could say was, ME!”
Although she has been blind since birth, the former Devon Wilkins hasn’t let her handicap stop her from being one of the most active members of the community.
She is past president of the Orangeville and District Ability Association, recently finishing her second term. She also competes with the Dufferin Power Boosters and is administrator for the sports club for the physically disabled. Devon is also secretary of the Dufferin Amateur Radio Club and when all her other activities aren’t keeping her too busy she writes for The Banner.
“I’m just thrilled about the award and humble at the same time,” says Devon, “I really appreciate it and hope I can continue to live up to what they thought I did to warrant an award.”

Local Boys Pass Referee Tests
Brad Cotton, Steve Bremner and Bob Noble successfully passed examinations and are now carded officials of the Ontario Minor Lacrosse Association.
This was reported by the local lacrosse association.
The boys attended clinics in Mississauga, Shelburne and Brantford and wrote the examinations at the Brantford clinic. They were under the guidance of the local associations referee-in-chief, Jean Paul Gauthier.
The boys have been refereeing locally for three years and can now referee in any lacrosse league. Bob Noble and Steve Bremner were in Stratford on the weekend and officiated six games in the Dairy Food Peewee Tournament. It was reported the boys received excellent reports on the handling of the games.
With the growth of lacrosse in the area, other boys are also being given a chance to referee with Tom Edgerton working house league games this year.
