Council considers Alder restaurant
Wednesday July 2 2008
By Nelia Raposo, Staff Writer

Orangeville council is considering Gerry Hogenhout’s proposal for a sports bar and banquet hall on the second floor of the Alder Street recreation centre.

Not one to give up, this is Hogenhout’s fourth proposal for the space. Until recently he was pushing the idea of a chili bar. This development comes two months after Humber College decided against putting its culinary school in the former Don Cherry’s Sports Bar.

“It was a sad day when Humber pulled out. I think when they said they were no longer interested, their (council’s) options became more limited,” Hogenhout said.

Reached by phone, Director of Parks and Recreation Sonya Pritchard said, “the town has agreed to the concept of it operating as a sports bar and banquet hall.” This latest proposal is more of a partnership where the town and the business benefit and share in potential risks, a memo to council said.

“The place needs to be fixed. I think there’s an opportunity for myself and for the town; and taxpayers deserve something better than what is there,” Hogenhout said. “Some think I’m crazy to keep at it but hopefully I can show everyone.”

He commends Pritchard on her efforts towards encouraging the town to pursue every possible option.

If things go his way, Hogenhout plans on doing renovations to open up the space, with indoor patio-style seating, so that restaurant patrons can see events going on in the arena below. “I think it can work as...
