About 90 seniors enjoyed a full day of fun at the first Seniors Forum organized by Orangeville’s senior advisory committee.
“I think it’s important to have something for seniors every year … to reward seniors for everything they’ve given to the community,” Coun. Mary Rose said.
The event at the Lord Dufferin Centre featured guest speakers, entertainment and food.
Dufferin County Museum and Archives curator Wayne Townsend spoke at the morning session about seniors who have made a difference to the history of Dufferin County and what seniors are quietly accomplishing in the community. He also highlighted some members of the community who have made a huge contribution to Canadian history.
Jake Dheer, station manager for Rogers TV serving Dufferin-Peel Region, was the keynote speaker. His speech entitled ‘A Life of Significance,’ focussed on being blessed with what you have and giving back to the community through volunteerism.
Entertainment was provided by vocalist Siobhan O’Brien and the Lord Dufferin Centre Choir.
Concerts
The Lord Dufferin Centre Choir is directed by Mary Ann Parsons and Pam Claridge. In existence for two years, the choir features 15 residents of the centre who meet regularly for practices and who have held a number of concerts at the Lord Dufferin Centre and Dufferin Oaks. The choir will be singing at one of the Ontario Retirement Community Association conferences in the near future.
“Our choir is a group of beautiful people — inside and out,” Parsons said. “It is just wonderful to sit back and watch these seniors sing — with all their heart. They bring their passion to the choir and relive some memories through song.”
