An early morning vandalism spree has resulted in nine charges for a 16-year-old Orangeville boy. The youth was arrested last Tuesday (Aug. 19), after several windows were smashed with rocks throughout town.
Complaints started coming in at about 3:20 a.m., police say, explaining numerous residences and Orangeville District secondary school were targeted.
“So far the damage that we have is $11,500,” Const. Scott Davis, media relations officer, says, noting police believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
Responding to a complaint at a home on Lawrence Avenue, police say they observed two youths running from the scene; a third chose not to run and was apprehended.
A second youth was taken into custody the next day. He faces nine counts of mischief under $5,000.
Persons under the age of 18 cannot be identified under terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Additional arrests and charges are anticipated, Davis notes. The other two youths observed at the scene aren’t believed to have been active participants, he adds.
Police continue to investigate several acts of vandalism around town. Anyone with information about the incidents, or who was victimized and hasn’t yet filed a report, is asked to contact the criminal investigation branch of the Orangeville Police Service at 519-941-2522.
Details can be left anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
