Peel – The Peel Regional Police Marine Unit is reminding boaters to exercise caution and common sense when out on our waters this summer.
The summer weather draws many boaters to enjoy a trip out on Lake Ontario, and to ensure that everyone stay safe, we are asking them to keep the following basic tips in mind:
Always wear a flotation device
File a sail plan with a responsible person. If you don’t return on time, they’ll know where to start looking
Always check your marine weather forecast, especially for small craft wind warnings
Always keep a form of communication with you in case you need to call for help
Ensure your vessel is in good working order
Ensure that your vessel is equipped with all required safety equipment as per regulations
Be courteous to other boaters
The Peel Regional Police Marine Unit is made up of highly skilled officers who work hard to keep our waters safe for all to enjoy. In 2007, the unit stopped 3,325 vessels and enforced both provincial and federal laws. Recently, a male wanted in the United States was arrested by Marine unit officers during their patrol.
In the first half of 2008, the unit completed 6 emergency organ transports as part of our commitment to the Ontario Trillium Gift of Life Network. Our largest vessel, “Marine 1” will ensure our continued commitment to providing reliable and efficient services on our waters.
The Marine Unit regularly works with other Greater Toronto Area units and the Canadian Armed Forces in large scale search and rescue operations, as well as special events. Many presentations on boating and water safety have been given to individuals and groups at local schools and public events.
