On May 25 the C3 Canadian Cross Training Club (a not-for-profit Inglewood based health and fitness club) in partnership with Kinetico (a  Caledon business specializing in water purification systems) will together be hosting the 8th Annual Kinetico Caledon Kid’s of Steel Triathlon race at Caledon Central public school.
This annual community event was designed to get the whole family involved in a variety of athletic activities based around the rapidly growing sport of triathlon. The skills of swimming, cycling and running are combined to offer a broad range of age specific distances to challenge the novice and veteran alike.
Children as young as three years of age will each swim one length of the Caledon pool, and may do so wearing a life jacket or even having mom or dad join them in the water. They will then run from the pool to their bicycles/tricycles and ride 100 meters down the school’s paved driveway, immediately followed by a 100 meter run on grass to the finish line (one parent may accompany their child under six years of age from start to finish).
Starting at six and seven years of age things get more competitive, and each successive two year age category will compete (without parental assistance) at distances which increase progressively from a 50 meter swim, 1.5 km bike and 500 meter run, up to the adult distances of 400 meter swim, 15 km bike and 5 km run.
Race director Stewart Barclay says, “the sport of triathlon has grown in popularity across Canada and more specifically throughout Ontario ever since Simon Whitfield won the Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Athens games. In 2000 there were less than 15 triathlon races offered in Ontario and now there are more than 80 multi-sport races offered, of which our May 25 KOS race is the only one offered in the Town of Caledon.”
And for fun, the Tri-Cool Caledon Triathlon relay allows three friends, work colleagues or a family, to divide the swim, bike and run section up between one another in a relay format. The distances are 400 m swim, 15 km bike on any bike that is human powered with wheels, and a 5 km run.
Come out and join as a participant, spectator or volunteer for the day. Cheer on a family member or challenge your own fitness level.
