Logan McGuinness-Cotton made short work of Manitoba’s Tim Watts in their Aug. 15 bout, scoring a knockout win 1:34 into the fight.
The Orangeville resident ran his professional boxing record to 2-0, while Watts fell to 0-3 after their fight in Enoch, Alta.
“It all happened pretty quick,” McGuinness-Cotton said. “I landed a hard jab right away and I knew that I was going to stop him.
“I’d heard that he leaves himself open for big shots, and that’s exactly what happened.”
An overhand right by McGuinness-Cotton sent Watts stumbling, and a left hook brought him to the canvas. Watts was up after the referee counted to six, but that wouldn’t last long.
“I hit him with three straight right hands, and he almost went through the ropes,” McGuinness-Cotton said. “He got up at the count of eight, but his coach threw in the towel.”
The lightweight (135 lbs) fight was scheduled for six rounds.
“The knockout is great, it looks good on my record, but what I need right now is to get some rounds in,” McGuinness-Cotton said. “That’s the only way to get that experience, being in the ring when it counts. You can spar all you want, but it doesn’t compare to the real thing.”
Canadian title
Despite only having two pro fights under his belt, McGuinness-Cotton is currently the third ranked lightweight in Canada, and would be happy to take a shot at the Canadian title.
“That’s been the goal all along, to have me fight for a title after seven or eight fights,” he explained. “If a shot at the Canadian title or the Irish title (McGuinness-Cotton is eligible because his great-grandmother was born in Ireland) comes up, that’s great.”
The Orangeville fighter could be back in the ring as early as Aug. 29, on the undercard of IBF super bantamweight champion Steve Molitor’s fight with Ceferino Dario Labarda at Casino Rama in Orillia. At press time there was no decision on whether or not that would happen.
“I’ve been in shape for two months now, and I’m getting better and better,” McGuinness-Cotton said. “I’ll be ready for a fight Aug. 29, or else I expect to be on a card Sept. 19. Either way I’m ready to go.”
